Teaninich is a Highland single malt distillery near Alness, north of Inverness, with a history dating back to 1817. Founded by Captain Hugh Munro, it is one of the older names in Highland whisky, though for much of its modern life it has remained more familiar to blenders than to mainstream single malt drinkers.
Today Teaninich is owned by Diageo and operates on a large scale, producing malt whisky primarily for blends, including major Scotch names within the group. Official single malt releases are comparatively uncommon, with the 10 Year Old in the Flora & Fauna range among the best-known examples, while independent bottlers have offered a broader view of the distillery at different ages and cask strengths.
The distillery is notable for its unusual production set-up, using a mash filter rather than a traditional mash tun. Its whisky is typically fresh, structured and slightly grassy, with notes of green apple, lemon peel, cereal, herbs, waxy fruit and firm malt. With time in cask, it can develop more weight, showing vanilla, spice, orchard fruit and a dry, lightly mineral finish.
