Braeval is a Speyside single malt distillery near Chapeltown of Glenlivet, built by Chivas Brothers in the early 1970s. Originally known as Braes of Glenlivet, it later adopted the Braeval name to avoid confusion with The Glenlivet, while retaining its association with the high, remote southern edge of Speyside.
Today Braeval is owned by Chivas Brothers, part of Pernod Ricard. The distillery was mothballed in the early 2000s and returned to production in 2008, with most of its spirit continuing to support blended Scotch, including Chivas-related blends. Official single malt bottlings are rare, so Braeval is more often encountered through independent releases.
The whisky is typically light, clean and fruit-led, with notes of apple, pear, citrus, honey, vanilla, fresh malt and gentle spice. With age or richer cask influence, it can develop more texture, adding orchard fruit, toffee, soft oak and subtle floral depth while retaining a polished Speyside clarity.
Braeval remains one of the quieter names in the Chivas Brothers portfolio: modern, high-altitude and largely blending-focused, yet capable of producing elegant single malt when bottled on its own. For drinkers exploring Speyside beyond the familiar labels, independent Braeval releases offer a refined and often underrated style.
