Yamazakura is a Japanese whisky brand from Sasanokawa Shuzo, a long-established drinks producer based in Kōriyama, Fukushima Prefecture. The company's roots reach back to 1765 in sake and shochu production, while its involvement in whisky dates from the post-war period, making it one of Japan's more historically grounded smaller producers.
The name combines "yama", meaning mountain, and "sakura", meaning cherry blossom, giving the brand a distinctly Japanese identity. Yamazakura is associated with Asaka Distillery, where Sasanokawa Shuzo began more serious whisky production in the 2010s, building on decades of small-scale experience and blending activity.
The range includes blended whiskies, age-stated releases and single malt bottlings from Asaka, with profiles that often show orchard fruit, vanilla, cereal sweetness, oak spice and a light floral lift. As with several Japanese whisky brands, classification can vary by expression, so the distinction between Japanese whisky, blended whisky and world whisky-style releases is worth noting from bottle to bottle.
Yamazakura offers a quieter alternative to Japan's largest whisky houses. It is approachable and often delicately styled, but its interest comes from the combination of old regional drinks-making heritage, renewed distilling ambition and the developing character of Asaka's own malt whisky.
