Smokehead is a peated Islay single malt whisky from Ian Macleod Distillers, the independent, family-owned Scotch whisky company behind Glengoyne, Tamdhu and Rosebank. Launched in 2006, it was created with a more contemporary, disruptive identity than many traditional single malt brands, placing bold smoke and striking packaging at the centre of its character.
The whisky is sourced from an undisclosed Islay distillery, so the focus is on island style rather than named distillery provenance. The range includes Smokehead Original, High Voltage, Rum Rebel, Twisted Stout, Tequila Cask Terminado and 15 Year Old, with different expressions exploring higher strength, cask finishing and more mature peated whisky.
The house style is intense, smoky and coastal, with notes of peat fire, sea spray, iodine, citrus peel, pepper, malt and charred oak. Cask-finished releases add extra layers such as dark sugar, roasted malt, agave, tropical fruit or richer spice, depending on the expression, while the core bottling remains firmly built around punchy Islay peat.
Smokehead is not trying to be a quiet, traditional malt. Its strength lies in the way it brings Islay whisky to drinkers who want impact, energy and attitude, while still being rooted in the single malt category rather than simply relying on branding.
