Pusser's is a rum brand built around the history of the British Royal Navy's daily rum ration. Its name comes from "purser", the naval supply officer responsible for issuing the sailors' tot, and the modern brand was created after the Royal Navy ended the tradition on Black Tot Day in 1970.
Founded by Charles Tobias in the late 1970s, Pusser's was developed to recreate the traditional Admiralty-style rum blend for civilian drinkers. The brand is associated with rich, full-bodied Caribbean rum, particularly Demerara-influenced styles, and its range has included expressions such as Gunpowder Proof, Blue Label, 15 Year Old and selected limited or higher-strength bottlings.
The flavour profile is typically dark, robust and molasses-led, with notes of brown sugar, treacle, dried fruit, spice, tobacco, leather and polished oak. Higher-strength releases bring more weight and warmth, while aged expressions add greater depth, smoother wood influence and a more rounded balance of sweetness and structure.
Pusser's is not a delicate or fashion-led rum. It is best appreciated as a link to naval rum tradition: bold, warming and characterful, whether served neat, in a Dark 'n' Stormy-style long drink, or in the Painkiller cocktail with which the brand is closely associated.
