Kaiyo Whisky

Kaiyō is a Japanese whisky brand built around the distinctive influence of Mizunara oak, the rare Japanese wood prized for the sandalwood, incense, spice and coconut-like notes it can bring to mature whisky. The name means "ocean", reflecting the brand's practice of sending casks on a sea voyage after maturation in Japan.

The whiskies are generally presented as blended malt or world whisky-style releases rather than conventional single distillery expressions, with the precise composition varying by bottling. This makes Kaiyō best approached through its maturation and blending philosophy: Japanese oak character, careful cask management and a deliberately unusual final period at sea.

The range includes the core Mizunara Oak expression, Cask Strength, The Peated, The Sheri and further limited releases, including bottlings exploring different wood and cask influences. Flavour profiles typically combine soft malt, tropical fruit, vanilla, baking spice, incense, gentle oak and, in some expressions, peat smoke or richer sherry sweetness.
