Janneau is a long-established Armagnac house based in Condom, in the Gers department of south-west France. Founded in 1851 by Pierre Étienne Janneau, it has become one of the better-known international names in Armagnac, helping bring the region's distinctive brandy tradition to a wider audience.
Today Janneau is part of Spirit France and produces Grand Armagnac from eaux-de-vie drawn from the Armagnac region's key grape varieties and growing areas. The house is notable for its use of both traditional Armagnac continuous distillation and double distillation in pot stills, giving its blenders a broader palette of styles to work with.
The range includes accessible expressions such as VSOP and XO, alongside older blends and vintage Armagnacs. Younger bottlings tend to show fresh grape, orchard fruit, vanilla, soft spice and gentle oak, while more mature releases develop deeper notes of prune, orange peel, rancio, tobacco, leather, polished wood and warm baking spice.
Janneau offers a polished introduction to Armagnac: approachable enough for drinkers coming from Cognac or whisky, but still rooted in the earthier, more characterful spirit of Gascony. Its best bottlings show the richness and maturity that make Armagnac such a rewarding category to explore.
