Smoky, peaty whiskies are characterised by bold aroma, depth of flavour and a strong sense of place. Expect notes of wood smoke, ash, sea salt, spice, medicinal character or earthy peat, often balanced by sweetness, citrus or malt beneath. These are whiskies with presence and personality, ranging from gently smoky and coastal to intensely peated, medicinal and powerfully maritime.
Scotland is the natural home of this style, with distilleries such as Ardbeg, Lagavulin, Laphroaig and Caol Ila representing some of its clearest expressions, whilst Talisker and Highland Park demonstrate how peat can be integrated in a more restrained, layered approach. Longrow and Ledaig also belong comfortably in this flavour family, each offering its own distinctive interpretation of smoke and coastal character. In Japan, Yoichi serves as a notable example of peated whisky crafted with a firmer, more traditional style, illustrating how smoke and weight can be delivered with real precision beyond Scotland.
