Auchentoshan is Glasgow's most recognised single malt distillery, located on the city's outskirts in Dalmuir, where its urban setting makes it quite an unusual presence in Scotch whisky. Despite being situated in a densely populated area of western Scotland, the distillery has established itself as one of the defining names of the Lowlands, supported by an excellent visitor programme and a house style recognised for its accessibility, freshness and elegance. Auchentoshan's official visitor site continues to promote tours and whisky experiences at the distillery.
Officially founded in 1823, though distilling is often said to have occurred on or near the site prior to that date, Auchentoshan has changed ownership multiple times throughout its history. It was previously part of Morrison Bowmore, but today the distillery operates within Suntory Global Spirits.
Auchentoshan is particularly renowned for its triple distillation, uncommon in Scotch whisky, which contributes to the distillery's distinctively light and fruity character. The resulting whisky is frequently characterised by citrus, vanilla, soft malt and gentle sweetness, making it among the more accessible malts in Scotland whilst maintaining sufficient structure and complexity to reward careful examination.
