Ron Abuelo is one of Panama's best-known rum brands, produced by Varela Hermanos at Hacienda San Isidro in Pesé. The company's roots go back to 1908, when José Varela Blanco established what is widely described as Panama's first sugar mill, with rum production becoming part of the family business in the decades that followed.
The brand remains family-owned and closely tied to Panamanian sugarcane. Varela Hermanos grows, ferments, distils, ages and blends its rums within its own production structure, giving Ron Abuelo a strong estate-led identity compared with many brands built mainly around sourced spirit.
